Repair: Dog and Cat damage (non-urine)
Most home owners love their pet(s) with full understanding that some non-acceptable behavioural activities will occur from time to time (this is certainly no reason to get rid of a pet). Unfortunately, the actions of a cat or dog (among other pets) can cause damage to your rugs, carpets and textiles.
Slightly chewed corners, a pull of the fringe, and clawing can afflict structure and appearance. Shaneybrook's repair services are available to handle these matters with the professional approach of our conservation and preservation team.
How do Shaneybrook repairs differ from that of my local rug dealer?
As an example, normal wear may cause some of the overround wool wrapping on the side of a rug to have a loose hanging thread. Your adorable and often well behaved dog sees the loose thread while you're out for the day and the dog decides to pull. In most cases, the wool will not unravel far at all. But today, the dog decides to make a project out of it and he manages to create a larger damaged area.
The local rug dealer doesn't want to waste time on hand repairing the few inches of damage. The rug dealer points out that there is a bit more wear to the wool overround than you may have originally noticed. Instead, he recommends surging the entire side with a new wool wrapping. Surging involves taking the existing side and cutting the entire side of the rug so it is straight. Then the side of the rug is run through a machine which stiches new wool into the cut side. The finished product may look good now, but the cutting of the rug has left the side structurally unsound. Should the dog decide to pull on this area again, the entire surged side will pull free from the rug and leave frayed areas further into the body of the rug.
Shaneybrook's approach is to take care at understanding how the rug was woven when it was new (whether its from 1780 or 2005). The goal is to repair the rug and keep the structural integrity of the piece intact. The best choice in this example is to stablize the foundation in the damaged area and then use the correct wool to re-wrap the area that is missing. It may not cost as much as the surging and it is the correct method for the good of the rug.
If you have pets, you'll know they are not always the perfect angels we know and love. In cases of damage, Shaneybrook's is the choice to best preserve your rug with proper repair.

Other repair examples.
Day-to-day use and abuse always results in regular maintainance and repair. Some typical repairs are detailed below: rough ends, fringes, unravelling sides, kicked-up corners, and that small spot the dog chewed or the cat clawed while you were out. Shaneybrook services all of these repairs and more.
Restoration.
When abuse or damage exceeds the capabilities of more simple repairs, restoration is available. The nature of restoration projects demands a more individual assessment for the needs of your rug or carpet. A member of our conservation team can provide you with the best options and a plan for any restoration project.
